Years of the Movement:
Romanticism began in 1800-1860. European Romanticism reached America and it appealed to Americans because of its revolutionary spirit. It ended because the Industrial Revolution brought new realism with it.
Ideals and Elements:
Romanticists believed that emotions and instinct were more important than reason. Elements in romanticism were the love of nature, love of common man the supernatural, nationalism, heroism, and strange and far away places.
Political Stance:
Most Romantics were opponents of Calvinism. They wanted freedom of expression against tradition and customs. Romanticism saw a rise in women poets and writers. Romantics portrayed slavery to appeal to peoples senses and this tied in with them being abolitionists. There were romantic feminists that wanted to develop women's minds so that they could be more knowledgeable.
